Nate's Senior Portrait

Last Sunday I had the pleasure of going out with Nate and his parents to take his Senior Portrait. We headed over to the Lynx Golf Course in Otsego, MI and had a blast, (as a plus, we also got a few great images out of it :P !)

If you're interested in having your students Senior Portrait taken before it gets too cold - please let me know as soon as possible and I'll work you into my schedule. I can also setup a home sitting with studio lighting! Packages start at $200 and include a DVD and online hosting, and a great collection of images to enjoy for a lifetime.

Its definitely worth mentioning that ALL packages come with online image hosting, as well as an Archival DVD with all your full size Tiff photographs, as well as small web-safe images. My services also include the use of my Professional Photo Lab for prints and products made with your art!

Mothers Day

Just posting a few photos of my Mothers Day antics with family. We went to this Gluten free pizza place in Redondo Beach, Garlic Jims (most of my family has Celiacs Disease, which is a intolerance for wheat) We had a Margarita Pizza ... = no so good :). But, that's alright because my Momma was happy! After lunch we went back to my brothers house to see the dog's and the new garden.

Danae's graduation portrait

Its almost time for graduation! Me and Danae went out the other day to take photos to celebrate her upcoming graduation from Cal State Long Beach (Yay Danae!!!). We mailed the photos in announcement cards that went out to all of her friends and family. We had a great time deciding on the best ones and later we went back home to the studio where we shot the classic cap and gown... It was a really short shoot, but we still had a blast. Thanks Danae!

Fun at the Wilderness Park

I had a great time with Julie at the Wilderness Park today, we decided to take a quick trip over there before I had to meet with a school group @ 1pm. I think we ended up with some great shots, she even ~~took~~ stole the camera from me at one point. We have one more idea that we're working on, it involves non-toxic paint haha.

As for other news... I've just finished a photo shoot with Amelia- I'm very happy with the results! Its nice to know that we can go out to a location without any real plans and come out with some great photos.

Here are some of my favorites.

BTW, It might be worth mentioning that these were shot around noon - I like to shoot against the sun using it as a backlight, and meter for skin tones.

After lunch on Sunday, me and Rob (my ~~slave labor~~ assistant/brother) went up to PV to check out some of the parks I remembered as a kid. I ended up making a strange phone call to my Mom, asking if she remembered what park I was trying to remember, you know, the one with rocks and leaves and trees and lots of shade... ? Oh, and Dogs. My memory has a funny way of fragmenting so that I only remember a few picture like images, and in this case - rocks and leaves and dogs were the images I remembered. I'm sure that I had been to this park plenty of times before but, she got it right on her first guess and me and Robbie found our way without a problem. It was fairly close to what I remembered, except being somewhat smaller.... But nevertheless, Its a great park! I was very surprised by the number of places I could just sit Rob down and get great light! This picture, obviously isn't a conventional type of portrait lighting, but I like it - It works for me. I could have bumped up the light on his face with a reflector too, but I didn't have one handy since we were sort of wingin' it. Anyway, I found another park too, which I wasn't too impressed with but would work in a pinch. Shoot me an email if you'd like to set up a session here, or anywhere else for that matter :). Peace.

This was also taken there, on a little bridge down by a walking path. Cool little thing, you should check it out! Well. I hope all of you appreciate how much money I just spent to make photo's of you look about 1000% better :). This is the Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS lens, the cost is up there in the range of small cars - and should make for some really impressive photographs! It ranks up there are one of the best and most professionally used lenses on the market in the Canon family, and I have a lot of expectations for it. I've used one at work, and even though the lens is all beat up and not babied in any sense of the word, it still functions great and produces fantastic images.

Its going to be my primary portrait lens, while 50mm is about what the human eye see's, this focal length (70-200) is great for people. I decided on this lens specifically because it had a f/2.8 constant aperture, which will create a really pretty background blur (also called Bokeh). I'll get it Monday if the shipping Co. follows through, very, very excited.

Well I'm officially sick of taking pictures of myself, Its kinda like... playing chess by yourself. There really isn't any satisfaction when you get a "good" shot, what... am I gonna give myself a little pat on the back, "Good job! I'll keep you in mind for my next shoot.." haha. Whatever, it works in a pinch, or when I'm bored out of my mind on a tuesday night (err.. wednesday morning). Time flys! Anyway, this is done by shooting my bare flash up on 1/2 power to give me a nice big light source, which normally would give you a softer light, but It kind of fell off around the edges of my face which I liked. I will hopefully get to try this with somebody soon, I get a little frustrated when my models are busy with stuff (ie Robbie: except me and him both are sick of shooting him haha)... oh well!

On another note, I've set up a way to pay for you all to pay me :) via Paypal! (You know, the safe and secure way to buy things online!) Basically the way it works is you contact me to schedule an appointment and shoot time, and once we get together and make some great photographs I'll email you a detailed invoice where you can conveniently pay by credit card through Paypal. Plain and simple, no funny business. Sounds like a good deal to me!

A quick thank you goes out to Josh and Danae for happily being my subjects on the 8th, this was a fun little shoot, albeit short.... But beyond that that, I'm quite happy with my new little umbrella - it was a little expensive, which I will blame on Pauls Photo for their markup craziness. But I guess you get what you pay for, and I'm happy with the results so far :). My next purchase should be a... well I'm not entirely sure, I suppose some pocket wizard flash triggers would be nice, and maybe a new Canon flash with TTL support... I'm getting a little north of my price range now. Enough of that.

Well Its official, I now have a design that I feel good enough about to actually print. I have been trying a bunch of different designs, and they were all kind of complicated... I just decided on a really simple layout. Hopefully it will turn out great on 2x3.5's! I have a few other idea's too, different front photos and the like. Anyway, I guess I should be putting my blog address on there too huh... interesting!

This is an image I took in Newport a few months back, its one of my favorites from the group. I ended up stopping in Newport on a whim, I was on my way to visit my family in LA and couldn't resist pulling off the freeway. Long story short, I ended up driving around for about 25 minutes (lost) and getting to the beach just in time to miss the sun go down. It was my intention to capture the sun go down in the generic fashion but ended up cranking up my ISO for the after glow. People didn't seem to mind being photographed around there, so It wasn't hard to shoot away. That was such an awesome day :)
